Learn more about 17th century Dutch painter Johan Vermeer at the next general membership meeting of the Durango Friends of the Arts. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, at the Durango Arts Center. DAC Docent Steve Walker will present the program.

Vermeer specialized in middle class domestic life and middle class residents of his neighborhood, like the painting at right, Girl with the Pearl Earrings. Contact Karren Little at littlekarren@gmail.com for more information.

Artists' Market cancelled

This year's Artists' Market has been cancelled because of too many other community events and arts activities this summer. We've had very limited interest. So, next year . . . .

Stillwater Open House
& Performance Night

Durango Friends of the Arts grant recipient, the Stillwater Foundation, will host an open house with faculty and student performances from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 11, at the Stillwater Music Facility, 121 W. 32nd St., Unit E. Knock on the Speakeasy Door, for All That Jazz,
the fifth-annual Ya Ya Sisterhood Luncheon on May 10

Join your girlfriends for All That Jazz on Saturday, May 10, at Carol Treat's speak-easy at 51 Cliffs Edge Drive in the Glacier Club. Starts at 11 a.m. Limited to 40 women. Dance the Night Away on June 14
with Tim Sullivan at Edgemont Picnic Grounds

Join your Durango Friends of the Arts friends who purchased Tim Sullivan and his band for a night of music and dancing on Saturday, June 14. It starts at 4:30 p.m. when the picnic grounds  open. Bring a picnic dinner and your own beverages. Music and dancing commence at 6 p.m. A dance floor and some tables will be under a tent.

Cost is $100 for you and five friends.

German Food AND Music
from the incomparable Marilyn Garst

Marilyn Garst will host a fantastic German dinner and piano concert for a lovely fund-raiser scheduled for Friday, June 27, at her home. Her sister, Bonnie Mangold, will accompany her. Dinner and concert will be $100 per person, limited to 14 people.

Style 'n' Stones Jewelry Class has a few more openings

We've had a few openings from some cancellations, so the
Style 'n' Stones Jewelry Class has a few more openings. The class will be on Saturday, June 28. Cost is $100, all of which will be donated to the Durango Friends of the Arts. Mahjong and/or Hiking at Marcia Baxter's Home with Lunch

Game Day at Carol House's Home on Sept. 29

Play Mahjong or regular bridge with a delightful lunch prepared just for you. It'll be on Monday, Sept. 29, at Carol House's Home. Cost is $35 per player. Limited seating. Call Carol at 385-4564.

Ongoing Activities for DFA's Benefit

Several ongoing activities are available to raise funds for Durango Friends of the Arts. Here they are:
  • City Market Card: Use your City Market Card to contribute to Durango Friends of the Arts. When you shop at City Market, a portion of your purchases will be donated to City Market. However, you have to register your card and designate DFA as a beneficiary. Go to citymarketcommunityrewards.com. You'll need your card number.
  • Zumba Lessons: Join Karyn Gabaldon for Zumba classes, get fit, and donate to Durango Friends of the Arts. The first dance lessons start on Saturday, May 17. Cost is $10. Contact Karyn at kgabaldon@rmi.net or call 247-0648 to sign up for her class. All proceeds will benefit DFA.
  • Mahjong: Contact Joanie Thomas at 375-9274 for times, dates of weekly games. Cost is $1 per day.

for Your 2014 Dues

Membership dues support the Durango Friends of the Arts administrative costs that allow the organization to raise money throughout the year to support arts projects. 

Membership dues are:
  • $35 for individuals
  • $50 for couples/families
  • $75 for businesses (includes 2 memberships)
  • Free for those over 80 years old
Membership dues are half price after July 1 with the full amount due after Jan. 1 of each year.

General membership meetings are the second Thursday of January, March, May, July, September and November. They are open to the public.
